National School Lunch Week 2014!

October 13- 17 was National School Lunch Week  and The Abbey Group celebrated company-wide with contests and giveaways.

The Unity School in New Hampshire took the cafeteria contest and expanded it into their classroom. Sixth – eighth grade Language Arts teacher Jennifer Thompson of the Unity school described the event below:

The Abbey Group Pumpkin Contest–conceived by Unity Elementary School chef Cheryl Osgood and Math/Science teacher Carol Foley–was as fun as it was educational. Students had to guess the weight of a pumpkin on display, and whoever had the closest guess won the pumpkin. Winner Alicia Truell, seventh grade, was very surprised that she won and describes her educated guess: “I measured the circumference, weighed other objects and compared that to the weight of pumpkin, but I never thought that I would win.”

Students also had to explain in writing how they calculated the weight of the pumpkin, developed questions, and clarified answers to those questions. The projects were to be at least one page. Some of them are going to be given to the Department of Education, so they can be read and admired.  —Alex Taylor, Grade 7, Unity Elementary School, Unity, NH

Abbey Group Donates $2,500 to Vermont Food Bank

The Abbey Group has partnered with the Vermont Food Bank to educate students on childhood hunger and the hardship of food insecurity.  The effort started in May when all lunch menus featured facts about childhood hunger in Vermont and “Kate”, an illustration of a girl who represents the thousands of Vermont children who struggle with hunger.  As a part of the effort, The Abbey Group hosted canned food drives at over 25 schools around the state and donated $2,500 dollars to the Vermont Food Bank.

“The objective was to promote tolerance and civic responsibility.”  Marketing Director of The Abbey Group said “We wanted to engage students by giving them the facts and then offering a way to help the cause.”

The Vermont Foodbank is the state’s largest hunger-relief organization, serving communities in all 14 counties of Vermont through a network of more than 280 food shelves, soup kitchens, shelters, senior centers and after-school programs. The Vermont Foodbank, a member of Feeding America, is nationally recognized as one of the most effective and efficient nonprofits and food banks in the nation.

We made the news! Raising Money to Solve Summer Hunger

The Abbey Group has been working along side Hunger Free Vermont for years with the same mission: to get every child in the state continuous access to healthy foods. To help fortify this mission, we have started our own hunger awareness campaign coupled with fundraisers to help support Hunger Free do what they do best.

We  hosted our first FREE BBQ fundraiser in St. Albans  last week and it was a huge success, nearly 500 people from around the county come out to support the cause and together raised over $1,000 for Hunger Free Vermont.

Hunger Free Vermont is an organization dedicated to educating and advocating against the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for Vermonters. They are actively involved in public schools around the state, dedicated to providing nutrition education and expanding access to nutrition programs that nourish Vermont’s children.
